What is human papilloma virus and how is it transmitted?
Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the virus that causes warts. It is transmitted via direct contact. Skin contact results in skin warts, but is otherwise not medically important; sexual transmission is more dangerous, as HPV has been implicated as one of the most important factors in the development of cervical cancer.
There are many strains of this virus, and testing can identify those strains that are at highest risk of causing cervical cancer. It is vital for women with genital HPV to undergo routine testing for cervical cancer by pap smear or colposcopy.
