When is the correct time to prune crape myrtles?
Prune crape myrtle during the dormant or winter season, as this reduces sap lost. Remember that flowers develop on new growth and pruning is not required in order for them to flower. Prune when you have branches rubbing together or crossing each other to remove damaged branches or when they grow toward the center of the tree. Prune to develop a better shape to the tree or shrub. Prune to snip off seed pods. If you are growing a tree, prune the suckers that come up. Try to avoid topping trees as this changes the natural shape. There are varieties now that are available in short, medium or tall so buy according to your landscape situation."
