My wife and I recently found out she's pregnant. She thinks it's crucial to buy organic vegetables now. I don't agree and think it will just increase our grocery bill. Does she need to eat organic, or is she just a worrywart?
Of course the ideal situation would be to eat organic all the time, especially while pregnant. However, if this is a financial hardship, it would still be beneficial to buy organic among select foods that tend to be most heavily contaminated. These would include grapes (and hence raisins), celery, strawberries and apples. I would also recommend using organic chicken and grass-fed beef or wild venison whenever possible. And dairy products, especially those with high fat content such as butter, should always be organic.
Fish oil is very beneficial for brain development, especially during the first trimester. Here too, avoiding shellfish and choosing the deep coldwater fish is safest for reducing heavy metal concentrations.
So with a little information, one can make smart food choices. Please see Diet for a Small Planet by Frances Lappe for a complete list of foods that are most heavily treated by pesticides, etc."
