Introduction
Hello everyone! By now there is probably a pool going on regarding what day my next entry will be submitted, if ever. All I can tell you is that it's been a very busy few weeks since the last time I wrote one.
Around the time that we were packing to move back to civilization, I became very ill with what can only be described as the worst stomach flu I've ever had. I felt sick for about 2 1/2 weeks eventually finding out that it was a severe case of 'salmonella' or food poisoning.
We had only been in Lethbridge for 4 days when a 5-year old girl (Jessica Koopmans) that my daughter, Victoria, had become fast friends with went missing on Friday night. The very next morning, the police were knocking on our bedroom window at 6:30 am searching for this girl. Some of you may have heard this story on the news. As with many cases like this it has ended badly with the girl's body being found about 50 kilometres southwest of here. I can only say that I can't imagine being the parents of this 5-year old girl.
At this point, no one has been arrested for this crime. So, as most parents, we've had to limit the kids' outdoor activities until an arrest has been made. My personal feeling is that it will turn out to be a person living in this neighbourhood with a prior history involving crimes against children. A sad commentary on a society that is not allowed the option of the death penalty. Or in lieu of that, to at least keep individuals convicted of these crimes locked up for the rest of their natural lives.
On a more positive note, the kids are okay and are adjusting well to our new place in Lethbridge despite this tragic start to our lives here. I guess if nothing else, this will be a wake-up call for people here that despite the small-town flavour of this small western city, we aren't immune to this type of crime that people here previously thought could only happen in a big city.
I think I've gotten some of these things off my chest now and I'll try to be more upbeat next entry. Please teach your kids that they have to be very wary of strangers and even people they know and to always tell their Mom and Dad if something seems wrong.
Anyway, take care, talk to you soon.
Peter
