Doug's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

December 24, 2001

Last week, in anticipation of hosting Christmas festivities for a dozen, Karen and I finally moved a few of our home interior improvement ideas from the Talking About It column over to the Doing It column. In a bizarre twist of logic, our home office - a seemingly insignificant room - was discovered to be the linchpin area of the house in meeting our goals of maximizing space and reducing clutter. So Nathan and I dispatched ourselves to the office supply store on Tuesday morning and bought a new computer desk. Nathan helped by trying out one office chair after another. While we have a fine chair already and were not in the market for a new one, the fact that chair-testing kept him occupied and happy was of great assistance to me.

He was predictably fascinated by the assemble-it-yourself absurdity of the panels, bolts and screws that Karen and I scattered out before us to build our new desk. And, best of all, there were parts we did not intend to use which made for excellent distractions for him ("Here, Nathan. You can play with this thing.") He had even more fun on Saturday night when Karen came home with some shelves for the office closet. Since we had to empty the closet to reorganize it, Nathan got the chance to pore through a number of things he'd never seen before, including stacks and stacks of old pictures. I'm not sure if we were ever able to explain to him convincingly why he did not appear in any of the pictures of our wedding. He knew all of the rest of the people in those pictures, so didn't he remember attending the big party?

There were two special events at preschool this week. On Wednesday, Miss Leslie brought in her pets - four ferrets! Nathan talked about them a lot for the rest of the week, especially after he learned that they were members of the weasel family. His current favorite book is Never Tease a Weasel, which helped him remember to treat Miss Leslie's pets nicely, I hope. And on Friday, Nathan's class had a luncheon to celebrate the last day of class before the lengthy Christmas break (He doesn't know, of course, that there is going to be a long holiday break, and Karen and I dread telling him!) Nana came along with me to the luncheon, so she got to meet all of Nathan's classmates and see his school. We all had a fun time playing Pin the Scarf on the Snowman and having a delicious lunch together.

And last but not least, I have to tell you about the other shopping trip that Nathan and I took last week, if for no other reason than to demonstrate how single-minded of purpose he can get sometimes. Some of you know how much I loathe shopping malls, so naturally I was trying to be quick about our purchasing. We were searching for gifts for Miss Leslie and for Nana, which he knew, but he soon became distracted by finding presents that would be appropriate for John Robert's mother! I tried to explain to him that we weren't exchanging presents with John Robert's parents, but he was not swayed. We stopped in a number of different stores, and at each one he would pick up something and say "Who would like this? John Robert's mother." I have to admit, he picked out some pretty nice things, so I used his keen eye to have him select two gifts for Nana. At least I'm off the hook if she doesn't like them.

From all of us here at Nathan's house, we wish your family a very happy holiday season!
