BREATH HOLDING SYNDROME
I never knew there was such as thing as breath-holding syndrome, but after doing a quick search on google to find out why kids hit their heads, take a couple of gulps of air, hold their breath with their mouths wide open, and in some cases pass out, I now know it is not that uncommon.
Jordan favored us with a couple of episodes in one evening, both after hitting his head. The contact wasn't hard, but coupled with other factors we can only guess about, they brought about the breath-holding and subsequent passing out. He was breathing while he was passed out, but this didn't make me or his mother feel any better about the situation.
According to the literature and the nurse, the breath-holding will stop without blowing on his face or throwing water in it, and, if unconsciousness ensues, it, too, will end on its own. I can say honestly, however, that I did not feel like waiting for either.
We will have him a checkup Monday, and will likely find there is nothing wrong with him. There appears to be no signs of concussion, as he went about his normal routine soon after both episodes. It was just very, very scary.
