Tackling Money Worries
The Priceless Feeling of Being Debt-Free

Ellie Kay, a mother of five children from Palmdale, Calif., and the author of A Mom's Guide to Family Finance (Spire Publications, 2006) and Half-Price Living: Secrets of Living Well on One Income (Moody Publishers, 2007), says to find creative money solutions.
Kay says the first step to stop worrying about money during pregnancy is to replace worry with action. "Take one small step a day to improve your finances and prepare for your child's birth," she says. "It can be as simple as comparison shopping on the Internet for baby furniture or shopping at resale stores for baby items that are new."
Kay says small steps may add up to big bucks over the course of your pregnancy.
Kay had five pregnancies in seven years. Since money was tight, she had to be resourceful. "I turned my worry into work and created a whole new business in the process," she says.
One of her strategies was to designate Tuesday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. as her "worry hour." "When I was tempted, during the week, to fixate on our money problems, I'd write down the concern and shelve it until my worry hour," she says. "This was just a way of compartmentalizing the worry, and most of the times I was so busy doing productive things that I forgot to worry during my worry hour."
While it's tempting to want to go and buy everything for your baby on credit, Kay says debt only creates stress for parents. "Babies don't know the difference between a new crib and a slightly used one, but they do know when Mama is stressed," she says. "So the best thing you can do is minimize debt and thereby minimize stress as well."

Two baby showers! Five baby showers! Who the hell are these people! I have never heard of any woman getting so many gifts.
