Up Close and Personal
The Ins and Outs of the Delivery Room
By Mark Stackpole
Just like Mom and Baby need a bag, so does Dad. Remember to bring phone numbers, your toiletries, comfortable sleeping attire and a change of clothes. You will be in charge of insurance cards and info (make sure to pre-register at your hospital). Many labors do involve some downtime, so have you brought a book or other distraction? Snacks? Throat lozenges? You will need to take care of yourself if you are going to take care of her.
One thing you might not think to bring is your bathing suit, which, according to Pitcock "is very much appreciated if you plan on helping your partner relax in the shower." (Speaking of "appreciated," how about some thank you cards for the doctor and nurses who are so crucial to the process?) Figure out what things you need so that you can be at your best for her and the baby, and then pack them up and throw them in the car. It's going to be a heck of a ride.
Be prepared to be awed and humbled. You will be proud of your partner for the amazing job that you have just watched her complete. You will be proud of the little one for taking that first journey from the darkness into the light. And if you play it right, you will be proud of yourself for being there when you were needed the most.
Now go home and be proud of each other together as a new family. Congratulations. You've earned it.
