Up Close and Personal
The Ins and Outs of the Delivery Room
By Mark Stackpole
Whatever you do, don't get complacent and assume that everything is under control. Take care of yourself, of course, but don't get too relaxed. "Many nurses feel that father's chairs are too comfortable and remotes should be banned from the labor room," says Pitcock. "Sometimes both are a bit too distracting."
Your job is to make her as comfortable as possible. "Know that you are responsible for getting many cups of ice chips, rubbing a tennis ball on her back, letting her know that the contraction has peaked and is on its way down and especially telling her that she is doing a fantastic job," says Pitcock. If she starts feeling physically ill or the pain is becoming too much, go get the nurse. Perhaps your biggest responsibility is to help your partner breathe and get through the pain. "Remember to communicate gently; loudly saying, 'Breathe, breathe' will not cut it. Having her follow your calm-voiced lead, however, will work wonders," says Pitcock.
Yes, you have a lot to do, and your partner is going to be totally focused on the task at hand as well. However, as these are memories that you will want for the rest of your life, make sure you take the opportunity to actually make some. You might be afraid that you don't have the stomach to watch, but you do, and you should. Trust me, you will regret every second that you miss.
Pitcock wants people to remember that: "This will be a memory that a couple can always treasure. Know that there are people there to help you and her. This is a miracle that a couple can share together."
