Just a Game
Learning Not to Keep Score
By Mark Stackpole
For one shining afternoon, though, whether or not they hit the ball, these kids all hit the field. They laced up their cleats, put on their mitts and did the best that they could, which is all we had a right to expect of them.
One day, I hope to hit the field with my kids and watch as they get their first hit, make their first error and trot across home plate for the first time. Perhaps I'll even coach, if I can keep my own nerves in check. My wife and I have not yet been able to have those future players, but the next time I get so bogged down in visits to the doctor and conversations about Clomid, IUI and IVF, I'll remember what happened yesterday.
I know that we can't go back in time, but what happened yesterday can give us strength as we head into tomorrow. So, yeah, today, life might seem more like a sporting event, with time running out and the score not in our favor. But yesterday?
Yesterday, it was a game.
