Mall Madness
Tackling Shopping With a Baby or Toddler
By Lisa A. Goldstein
Some men don't like to go shopping. Imagine if a baby or toddler is thrown into the mix! Dads may be scared to tackle the grocery store or mall alone with their child because of issues ranging from feeding to changing to safety.
If you're one of them, don't fear. Dads who have been there and done that have plenty of tips to share.
The key to a successful outing is a well-packed diaper bag. Having a checklist to refer to will ease your stress, says Susie Kohl, a parent consultant, author and college instructor in child development. "If you haven't figured out that you take an equipped diaper bag everywhere you go, then you're not paying attention," says Todd Pinsky, author of Homedaddy: Little White Lies and Other Tales From the Crib (Push Pull Press, 2003) and full-time stay-home father of two young girls. "Pretty much any time you leave the house, you bring enough supplies to last the Donner party 'till the spring thaw."
This means packing the diaper bag with the usual stuff: diapers, wipes, hat, coat, sunscreen, rainboots, etc., when appropriate. "A few toys or favorite books are good ideas in case the lines are long," says Armin Brott, author of The New Father: A Dad's Guide to the First Year
