A Father Watches His Child's First Prenatal Dance

When "Day 12" arrived and Charlotte began to cramp and spot a little bit, we geared up not only for the familiar disappointment, but also the emotional and financial investment we knew IVF would require. However, "Day 14" brought a positive pregnancy test. I re-read the label many times to confirm that there was no other way to interpret the blue "+" in the little window. ("We are positive that you are NOT pregnant this time.") It seemed too amazing to be true. In the span of 48 hours, we had become one of those stories – a couple about to give up on becoming parents who take one more shot, only to have it finally work.
In the weeks that have followed, I am not sure that the shock has ever worn off. Of course, the cool disbelief has gradually been replaced by the warmth of spreading joy, but the shock that Char is finally pregnant and that we are actually going to be parents is still very much with us. Every two weeks since we got the positive result, our infertility clinic (or can I call it a "fertility clinic" now?) has been bringing us in for an ultrasound to make sure that everything is looking good.
During the first appointment, we were shown our "little black blob" and told that the embryo was a little behind schedule and that there was no heart flutter to be seen yet. The nurse practitioner delivered a miscarriage speech – "I know this is going to scare you, but I am required to do it" – and ordered an hCG test
