Toddling Toward Independence
What Dads Need to Know
as Their Children Grow
as Their Children Grow
By Mark Stackpole
As children get older, they begin to recognize the importance of their time with Dad, and they are probably interested in getting more of it. With the fast pace of modern life, this time can seem like a luxury to a dad, but it is not. It is a necessity. "Dads can get so busy juggling their children's schedules and their own work and social schedules that they forget to get involved in the 'little' things of their children's lives," says Kuczmarski. "They need to slow down and savor those moments together. They need to give their hearts and be available, present and open."
Get ready, Dad. There are a lot of eyes on you as you continue on this journey. The most important ones are those little ones looking up at you from somewhere around your knees. Dads have to stay on their toes, as their relationships with their children are roughly akin to a ride on the white water rapids – the most adventurous, rewarding and terrifying thing that they have ever done.
So get in the raft, paddle hard, hold on tight and don't blink your eyes. It all goes so fast that you might miss something.
