The Turnaround

Unexpectedly Stepping into Parenthood

By Joseph Trussell

Back at home, I relayed the instructions to Vanessa. Why we placed our trust in the expert opinion of a loud grocery store cashier I will never know, but we went ahead and took his advice, deciding to delay the inevitable until the next morning.

I had plans to attend the Broncos-Colts game that Sunday night with my brother-in-law, so after a long day of diametrically opposed, tense silence in our apartment and loud, screaming strings of completely confused thoughts in my head, he and I went to the stadium.

A barnburner of a game, it was played in a snowstorm and even went into overtime. To this day, though, I cannot remember one single play. I do remember standing in the cold, clutching a cup of hot chocolate, thinking to myself over and over again, we're pregnant. We're pregnant. We are pregnant. We are having a baby. A child. Us. A baby. We are having a baby.

I found myself dying to scream out the words in exasperation to the entire crowd of 60,000 fans, but somehow kept the thoughts securely within myself for all four quarters as well as the overtime period.

I got home from the game and Vanessa and I went to bed without more than light, unrelated conversation. To my surprise, I was able to quell the cacophony in my head and somehow sleep soundly.

And the Verdict Is...
Vanessa shook me awake at bout 4:15 on Monday morning. "OK, here goes," she said resolutely, heading into the bathroom. She reemerged in under a minute. "It says on the box that it takes 45 seconds."
