Unexpectedly Stepping into Parenthood

But to my own private shock, "OK" was not the first term that popped into my mind.
"Yeah," she said. "I think so, but why did I just get sick? I had one glass of wine last night. Ugh. Those eggs stink."
We looked at each other as if each was hiding a thought. I shrugged my shoulders nervously, then turned and dumped the eggs in the garbage can.
I can't remember whose decision it was, but within a half hour I was at our grocery store buying pregnancy tests. I made my way through the express line, followed by eight or so other shoppers. After scanning the two EPT tests I'd sheepishly plucked from the shelf, the cashier waved them in the air and said with a loud, knowing seriousness, "Oh yeah, make sure you do these in the morning. They don't work in the afternoon. Believe me, I know."
In instant shock from these candid comments, I turned and looked behind me at the other waiting patrons, all now watching intently. I instinctively raised my left hand, exposing my wedding band. With a dry throat, I nervously addressed them as a grup. "Yep, I'm married; it's OK." I paid for the tests to an even louder "Good luck!" from the cashier and scurried out the door.
