9 Recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee
By Melissa Granberry
9. Keep food safe to eat.
Approximately 5,000 deaths are reported each year in the United States from foodborne illnesses – most of these caused by Salmonella, Listeria or Toxoplasma. To keep you and your family safe, the Committee recommends the following:
- Wash hands, contact surfaces and raw produce. Meat and poultry should not be washed.
- Separate raw, cooked and ready-to-eat foods.
- Cook foods to a safe temperature.
- Refrigerate perishable foods promptly.
- High-risk groups, such as young children, pregnant women, seniors and immune-deficient persons, should avoid higher risk foods. An example is frankfurters that have not been cooked to a safe temperature because these have a high risk for Listeria.
