9. Keep food safe to eat.

Approximately 5,000 deaths are reported each year in the United States from foodborne illnesses – most of these caused by Salmonella, Listeria or Toxoplasma. To keep you and your family safe, the Committee recommends the following:

  • Wash hands, contact surfaces and raw produce. Meat and poultry should not be washed.
  • Separate raw, cooked and ready-to-eat foods.
  • Cook foods to a safe temperature.
  • Refrigerate perishable foods promptly.
  • High-risk groups, such as young children, pregnant women, seniors and immune-deficient persons, should avoid higher risk foods. An example is frankfurters that have not been cooked to a safe temperature because these have a high risk for Listeria.

Keep It Simple

Still a little perplexed on how to keep your family healthy? Ostrowski shares the following tips from Seymour's Weight Loss Challenge Workbook. It's as easy as 1-2-3 (4, 5)!:

5. Five servings of fruit and vegetables a day.
4. At least four glasses of water a day.
3. Structured exercise three days a week for at least 30 minutes.
2. No more than two hours of screen time a day.
1. One hour of free play each day.
