A Dads-to-be's Sensual Side

How to Maintain Intimacy with Baby on the Way

By Mark Stackpole

In addition to her growing physical discomfort, her partner might be getting a bit anxious as well. Fear of somehow harming the baby during sex may cause his desire for sex to go down. According to Dr. Wilcox, lack of interest in sexual intercourse is a common complaint among many women in their third trimester, and his diminished libido may further damage her self-esteem.

From emotional support to sexual activity, there are many ways for a couple to remain intimate during pregnancy. Their focus is undoubtedly shifting to the arrival of their new baby, but remembering to pay attention to each other needs to remain a priority.

With his son's arrival only days away, Paul Vann has never missed an opportunity to remind his wife just how much she means to him. "Couples can keep the sparks alive by honoring the reason why they are together," he says. "All too often, couples forget what attracted them to each other in the beginning. I recommend people think about the attraction factor and never let it fade from their memory."

Showing Her How Special She Is

Dr. Wendy Wilcox has some suggestions for a husband looking for ways to show his love, support and desire for his pregnant wife:

  • Don't mention or ask about her weight. This will go a long way to promoting feelings of peace and well-being.
  • If he is afraid to have sex for fear of harming the baby, he should express these feelings to her and perhaps even go to a prenatal appointment to get the facts. "It's OK!" Dr. Wilcox says. "Go ahead as long as she wants to!"
  • Draw a warm bath and then share it with her.
  • Massage.
  • Do tasks around the house to make her life easier.
  • Small gifts can boost self-esteem and make her feel loved.
  • Who says she can't go out and party just because she's pregnant? Women love romance, and planning a night on the town, a surprise vacation or a dinner-and-movie date night can make her feel as if she is the luckiest woman on earth to have a partner who is so totally into her.
