Dads on the Front Line
The Fight Against Sexism By Kelly Burgess
Jeb Enoch of Farmington, Maine, is a single father of three daughters and the founder of Mainely Men Against Violence & Sexism. He works for Sexual Assault Victims Emergency Services (SAVES), a rape crisis center. His work with them began six years ago in a volunteer position.
"I had been looking for a place to volunteer in the community and came to SAVES," says Enoch. "The work that the women do here helping women survivors of sexual abuse and assault was very inspiring to me. I realized that women have been doing this kind of heavy lifting for a long time, and it's time for men to do their share. Nothing's going to change if men don't realize that this is our problem and not just a woman problem."
Kelly and Warren agree. Kelly says that, while it's unfortunate, the reality is that men will listen to other men more readily than they'll listen to women. If men add their voices to the women who are protesting against sexist media portrayals, corporations may begin to listen.
Warren also suggests voting with the pocketbook. Don't go to Penney's. Don't buy that brand of beer. Better yet, turn off that TV.
"We don't see this as a woman's issue, we see this as a people issue," says Warren. "The message we need to send to corporations is this: If you want my business, you need to stop perpetuating stereotypes. We have to all start talking about this."
