Easing Back into Intimacy

  • Don't Take it Personally: Your partner is not rejecting you in favor of your child. She still loves you and although sex is important, it's not the only way she can or will express her love.
  • Don't Withdraw: Although you may feel like holding back emotionally, don't. Remember that "the drought" may seem like it is lasting forever, but most likely, it won't.
  • Be Sensitive: Having a baby is physically demanding work. Toss in sleep deprivation, hormone dips and the loss of control many women report feeling because of the demands of a newborn, and it isn't hard to see why Mom is not feeling all that sexy.
  • Find Other Ways to be Intimate: Tenderness is key for both partners. A cuddle, a kiss, a back rub or a simple touch can speak volumes.
  • Make Time for Sex: Schedule intimacy like you would any other important event. Set up childcare arrangements with a family member or another couple so your baby can be taken care of for a few hours. But, remember, if Mom has been feeding your baby every two hours or so, she may need a day to rest up for the date so she won't fall asleep as soon as the lights go down. Try taking over the late night feedings for at least one day before the date so Mom can restore her energy reserves.
