Pressure to Provide
Balancing the Responsibilities of Father and Husband

Many Men Like Their Role as Breadwinner
Although the role of primary financial contributor and full-time employee can evoke a fair amount of pressure and demands, many men who fill this role are generally satisfied, and would not switch with their wives if given the opportunity. David of Beverly Hills, Calif. explains, "I am acting in the right role for my fulfillment as husband and father. Though I wish I had more time to spend with my family, I would not want to work part time." Seth agrees. "For my personal contentment, I need to be working out of the house and a good part of each day." He conditions his statement: "This does not mean that my wife need be allergic to paying bills, or appreciating that I work very hard to give her and my son a comfortable life."
Finding Relief from the Pressure to Provide
According to Dr. Kipnis, most men need the opportunity to socialize with other men who can personally understand and support sacrifices that they make. In Dr. Kipnis' experience, when pressure does build up, this social bonding between males, either by venting or discussing these issues, proves to be very therapeutic. 
In addition, men frequently have other venues for releasing built-up tension resulting from their numerous responsibilities. For Foreman, this venue is reading. "Reading allows me the chance to escape a little, to round out my life a bit, and it's a way of getting time to myself and for myself," he says.
