After Years of Infertility, A Couple Digests Wonderful News
By Mark Stackpole
a bit in response to the nurse massaging Char's lower stomach. Not even an inch long, huge head and tiny hands easily visible, our baby did a little dance. I reached for the Kleenex and had to sit down. Then, I had to stand up and hug my wife. By that point, we needed more Kleenex.
The frustration, the pain, the humiliation all melted away. The disbelief of the positive pregnancy test, the relief of seeing the heart flutter, the joy at seeing unexpected movement all served to easily erase all that had come before. I thought I would never forget the four years that we went through, but in a way, I already have. There are now so many more important things to think about.
We have one more appointment at the infertility clinic before we "graduate" to a regular OB/GYN. We are not going to put on robes and square hats to celebrate the conclusion of this four-year odyssey, but never have we studied harder or been tested more. And of course, we won't be getting a diploma for our efforts, but we will be getting either a Jake or a Corinne and the answer to a prayer that we thought would never come true.
Somehow, I think we'll manage.
