Walk the Walk
Being a Nutritional Role Model for Your Children
By Mark Stackpole
Brott believes that a father needs to "look in the mirror" if he is going to be a positive influence on his child's health. "It's not long before kids are doing the things that their father is doing – whether it's slamming down a phone, 'smoking' a pencil or eating a bag of potato chips," he says. "Is he asking his kids to do something that he is not? He needs to start setting an example."
As for Professor Jim Schneider, his eye has not wavered from his desire to be there for his sons "long term." In the year since embarking on his new and healthy lifestyle, he has totally committed to it. Encouraged by early weight loss, Schneider says, "I used the tentative confidence that I gained and decided to take a major step in re-framing the way I viewed food." Not only did his commitment result in the loss of 30 pounds and a myriad of other health benefits like lower blood pressure and better sleep, but Schneider also found himself to be dealing more positively with the adjustment to his new life on the East Coast.
The implications of his dedication extend far beyond being able to buy pants with a smaller waist size. "My entire family is eating much healtier, and we are all seeing the benefits of this," Schneider says. "It is my plan to continue this path for a lifetime and to inspire my boys to make similar choices regarding their health."
