High Hopes
It's Never Too Late for Those New Year's Resolutions
I tried to ease into it that afternoon as soon as she settled into her car seat. But the more angles I used to approach the subject, the more emphatic she became, and the more agitated we became. This was definitely a subject for a later time.
I stilled my tongue but my mind was still going. I replayed the incident. I saw my daughter very pleased and secure with her announcement about her future. Of course, she would be a big sister (her emphasis). I began to smile. Finally, I saw how uninfluenced she was by what all the others had said. She had thought of the one most important job she would have – that of nurturing close relationships. She would mature into this role that was very valuable to her. My tongue had almost caused me to miss her wisdom.
And a child shall lead.

Every year, as my family says goodbye to the old year and welcomes the new, we vow to make positive changes to make the wonderful family that we already have even stronger, healthier and happier. It's usually around the time when we're eating the last of the Valentine's candy that I re-vow to eat and feed my family more nutritious foods. Foods that fuel their growing bodies instead of providing a power surge of sugar. And this year, I finally figured out how to get my family on board with me.
