Inspiring Fitness and Fun in the Neighborhood

By Mark Stackpole

Or how about a basketball, flag football or soccer tournament at a local park or in the driveways of several neighbors? Mandel suggests having local competitions with the "big game" taking place at a neighbor's house.

Find out if there are people in your neighborhood who have special talents and skills and might be interested in sharing them. Find the artists and dancers in your cul de sac and have them help the kids pull something together. "Children can get together to rehearse, use household materials for costumes and put on a show or a competition," Mandel says. "If it is a competition, make sure that there are plenty of categories so that everyone gets some recognition."

The next time you are taking the trash out and making some small talk with the folks next door, find out what they like to do for fun. No matter what they say in response, that simple and courteous step just might create the opportunity for a whole group of neighbors to have that fun together, and create memories and fitness opportunities for our children – just as they did a lifetime ago.
