A Family That Skis Together...
Bonding on the Bunny Slope
By Colleen Frye
Since then, I like to think I've improved somewhat. And I was right that skiing would be a great way to enjoy the outdoors and bond as a family. My son, for example, gets to save my life every time I don't quite make it all the way onto the lift chair and I'm dangling by the small of my back over the icy pine trees. "Mom, again?" he says, hoisting me onto the seat. And my daughter gets to critique my ski apparel. "Mom, with that long black coat you wear and that long black and red stocking hat, and the way you zigzag so slowly down the mountain, you look like the Cat in the Hat!"
Still, I'm an old cat who, much to her astonishment, has learned a new trick. I know they're proud of me, even if I'm always the last one down the mountain. And I know that when the four of us stand at the summit, our ski tips pointed downward, I can always take the beginner slope while the rest of them take the black diamond.
I also know that beach season – and family games of sand volleyball – is just around the corner.
