Including Pets in Your Holiday Travel Plans

"Don't be backward in asking flight personnel about the status of your pet," Rosenblat says. "Be a 'squeaky wheel' – your pet's life could be at stake. Finally, the American Veterinary Medical Association recommends against tranquilizing pets traveling by air, because the medication disrupts their balance, lessens their reflexes and can cause respiratory and cardiovascular problems at high altitudes."

Packing Pocket Pets

If your pet of choice is a mammal smaller than a dog or cat, try the following tips to make taking your pocket pet both safe and enjoyable!

  • Always use a secure carrier. There are soft cloth carriers available that are light and easy to carry.
  • Place a towel inside in case your pet gets stressed and wishes to burrow. The towel can also be used to hold your pet on your lap during travel.
  • Clean your pet with a damp cloth once you arrive as your pet may have relieved itself during the journey.
  • Most carriers come with a water bottle and though they may not drink much during travel it should be available.

Traveling with your pet during the holidays can be an enjoyable experience as long as you plan ahead of time and your pet is cooperative. Having a goodtime is often easier knowing your pet is safe, cared for and with the family who loves him!
