Showers of Blue
Giving Dads-to-Be a Day of Their Own
By Gina Roberts-Grey, LCSW
In addition to selecting a name and decorating a nursery, having a baby shower is a staple when you're expecting a baby, especially for first-time parents-to-be. But why not create a fun and festive option to shine a spotlight on the father-to-be?
Some baby showers include the expectant father when the gifts are opened. Others have a couples theme to let a dad-to-be and other men join the party. However, it isn't often the case where a day is set aside for a dad-to-be to be showered with attention, gifts and games. And, despite their admiration and affection for both Mom-to-Be and Baby, most dads do not look forward to attending baby showers.
Although most men would feel out of place at a luncheon wrapped in pink or blue tulle, many fathers, including Paul Rizzutto of Hoffman Estates, Ill., admit they wouldn't mind a day of their own to celebrate the upcoming arrival of their new babies. First-time dads and repeat fathers alike would appreciate the thoughtfulness and consideration of being made to feel special while anxiously awaiting the birth of their child.
"The most important thing is maintaining a masculine flair," says Rizzutto, a father who has attended and planned a father's shower. This is crucial to planning a shower for Dad, and most prospective attendees are more likely to jump on board if the event has a catchy theme or name.
Most men are not concerned with finger sandwiches and frilly cake, so consider a barbecue buffet or a variety of pizzas as the main course. Themes such as "Bill's Last Baby-free Bash" or "Rob's Pre-baby Barbecue" pique everyone's curiosity and set the tone for a lighthearted, fun event.
