Get to Know Your Newborn

A Head-to-toe Look at Your Baby

By Donna Smith

Dad says...
"With AJ, it smelled horrible, and it took forever to fall off," says Franco. "Looking back, it might have been infected, so we probably should have had it checked out. I mean, it was putrid. The day of his baptism, he was all dressed in this beautiful white outfit, but if you got too close to the belly area, the smell would have knocked you out! None of the other kids came close to that. My advice: If it's that bad, have a doctor take a whiff."

And 10 Little Toes!
Don't be embarrassed to count each and every one of those cute little toes. But also be sure to keep them warm with socks or by dressing Baby in one-piece outfits. Newborns can easily become chilled, which can make the skin become blue in color. Toenails should be trimmed carefully, and be sure to clean between those little toes during bath time!

Expert Advice
"Shoes are not necessary until the baby begins to walk," says Dr. Fay. "While they may be an adorable accessory, shoes do not contribute to the development of the feet."

Dad says...
"I always worried about my kids being too hot," says Franco. "It seems like people of particular generations have this fear of babies always being cold. The hat thing drives me nuts, especially when it's 70 degrees and there's a slight breeze. I've been told my kids were going to get ear infections because it was breezy and they weren't wearing hats that covered their ears. If I followed all of this advice to keep my kids toasty warm, they would be drowning in sweat."
