Expert Advice
"Be very careful when trimming nails not to cut nails shorter than the end of the finger, and never trim the nails by tearing or pulling them, which can lead to infection," says Dr. Fay.

Dad says...
"Gina was difficult," says Franco. "Unfortunately she came into this world scratching and clawing anything in her path. We all bear scars of her wrath, pretty much all over the nose and cheeks. With her, we had to wait until she was good and sleeping, and then we went at her – double- teaming her – with the nail clippers."

Don't Be Stumped
Waiting for the umbilical cord stump to fall off can seem like a lifetime for new parents. But take heart – the stump will heal and fall off soon enough. Most parents are told to clean the cord stump with alcohol after every diaper change. But recent research has found that doing this does not make the cord fall off that much faster, and some hospitals are now treating the stump with triple dye, an antiseptic that guards against infection and only requires one application.

Until the stump falls off, be sure not to submerge Baby in water. Signs that the cord stump is infected include redness, discharge, odor, tenderness, bleeding and fever. Consult your health care provider immediately if any of these symptoms occur.

Expert Advice
"Occasionally the top of the front of the diaper can irritate the area of the umbilical cord stump," says Dr. Fay. "To avoid this, purchase diapers of the appropriate size, and, if necessary, fold down the front of the diaper to keep it from rubbing the umbilical area until the cord stump falls off."
