High Lead and Low Iron
What You Need to Know to Keep Your Baby Safe
By Kelly Burgess
As for risk, according to Drs. Lanphear and Canfield, here's what parents should know:
- Environment: The two populations at greatest risk for high exposure to lead, according to Dr. Lanphear, are low-income children living in poorly maintained rental housing and upper income children living in an older home that is being renovated. If you're child is in either of those risk categories, seriously consider having his lead levels measured. If you're thinking of renovating an older home, you may want to rethink your plans or get some good advice from an environmental engineer. Have your child tested if you live in a house that was built on a landfill or near a heavily traveled road before leaded gasoline was phased out. Don't let children play in bare dirt areas unless you know the area is free from lead.
- Purchases: Watch what you buy. Pottery and candies from Mexico have been found to contain lead, as have health supplements purchased from other countries. Avoid buying children cheap, discount store trinkets as they may contain lead. And, Dr. Canfield says, this doesn't just apply to babies, as many of the products in lead-based paint toy recalls are pieces of jewelry aimed at older girls. If you think you have any of those products in your home, throw them away.
