How to Survive Flu Season, Even Without a Shot

Frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. If you know that someone in your family is sick, wash your hands even more frequently than usual. It is especially important to wash your hands before, during and after you prepare food, before and after you use the bathroom, after handling animals or animal waste and when your hands are dirty.

What Happens If You Don't Wash Your Hands Frequently?
If you don't wash your hands frequently, you pick up germs from other sources and then infect yourself when you touch your eyes, nose or mouth. One of the most common ways people catch colds is by rubbing their nose or their eyes after their hands have been contaminated with a virus. You can also spread germs directly to others or onto surfaces that other people touch.

What Is the Correct Way to Wash Your Hands?

1. Wet your hands and apply liquid or a clean bar of soap. Place the bar of soap on a rack and allow it to drain.

2. Rub your hands vigorously together and scrub all surfaces.

3. Continue for 10 to 15 seconds. The soap, combined with the scrubbing action, helps dislodge and remove germs.

4. Rinse well and dry your hands with a clean towel.

It is estimated that one out of three people do not wash their hands after using the restroom. So these tips are important to follow not only at home, but also when you are out in public places.

A Healthy Lifestyle
It is important to get plenty of rest, eat nutritious meals and snacks and exercise regularly to keep your body at its healthiest to help fight off harmful germs that you may be in contact with. And when available, get your flu shot.
