Falling into Fall Fun

Autumn Activities for Toddlers and Preschoolers

By Beth Hering

Whichever fall activities you choose, it might help to dress your child in layers that can be removed and added as needed. A cool morning can turn into a warm afternoon and then back to a jacket-necessary temperature by dinner. A comfortable child (and parent, for that matter) is sure to have much more fun on any fall family outing.

Indoor Fall Fun

On blustery fall days that are best spent inside, make the great indoors as much fun for your toddler as the great outdoors with these ideas:

  • Play stuffed animal hide-and-seek by taking turns hiding and finding a few of your child's favorite furry friends.
  • Have an indoor picnic on a sheet spread out on the kitchen floor. Serve seasonal foods such as pumpkin bread, cider and fresh-cut apple slices drizzled with caramel.
  • Spend some time at your local library. Many places have story hours for youngsters while the "big kids" are at school. School-day hours are also a great time to get access to the computers in the children's section. Ask the librarian to recommend some programs from their collection, or try Web sites such as http://pbskids.org or www.nickjr.com for games, coloring sheets and more.
  • Cuddle up on your couch under a blanket big enough for two for a reading marathon of favorite stories.
  • Finger paint using fall colors. After the paper dries, trace some of your child's favorite leaves and cut them out. She'll now have a bit of autumn all winter long!
