Fuzzy Blue Hippo
A Letter to My Baby on the Way
By Mark Stackpole
Of course, you have already taught me so much, and you're not even here yet. I have learned that it is worth facing the dangers in life in order to fully behold its wonders. I am developing a depth of love and understanding that I never knew was possible. Perhaps most importantly, by the time you arrive I will know how to collapse a baby stroller so that it fits in the trunk (one of the great mysteries of our universe). Give me time, and I will learn how to make you laugh and calm your cries. We'll be just fine, you and I. What I have already learned from you reminds me of the lesson that a threadbare horse once taught a velveteen rabbit: It is love that makes you real.
When your mom and I went to the doctor this time, there was something that was different. As it turned out, you weren't where I expected you to be. In fact, you were much closer. Finally, your mom is pregnant with you. After a lot of effort, with a lot of love and support, you are right where we need you to be. We have faced a lot of "ifs," "ands," "buts" and "maybes," but you are finally on your way, right on your schedule, if not ours.
I very much look forward to meeting you, and I'll be right here waiting for you until you arrive. Don't worry about being able to recognize me...
I'm the one still holding the fuzzy blue hippo.
Love,
Dad
