25 Ways to Welcome the New Mom and Baby

"I hired a housekeeper that would come in every two weeks to clean the house," Hausinger says. "It made a big difference for my wife. I think it is important to show your wife how much you appreciate them putting themselves through this incredible ordeal. If men had to give birth, the population would dwindle and eventually end. Besides, she just gave you the most precious gift anyone can ever give."

But why wait until you get home? "When my cousin came home from the hospital with her daughter, her husband had put a tape into the car's tape player," says Robyn Freedman Spizman, gift-giving expert and author of Make It Memorable (St. Martins Griffin, 2004). "When he started the car to drive them home, the music came on and the song was 'You Are So Beautiful to Me' – the first song they danced to at their wedding, so it had extra-special meaning."

And it doesn't have to be music. New dads can also have flowers, a card or some other thoughtful gift ready for her on the front seat.

It is the thought that counts, but it may be the sentiment that counts more. Spizman relates the story of a mother who arrived home with a little girl after having had only boys to that point. "Her husband had a music box with a tiny ballerina, and there was a note that said, 'Our daughter's arrival is music to my ears,'" he says.

Spizman suggests that a new dad consider establishing new traditions upon his family's arrival at home. Dads can commemorate the occasion with flowers, and then send Mom those same flowers every year on the baby's birthday. Dad could alo give Mom a keepsake item that could, over time, be turned into a collection worthy of passing down to the next generation. Just about any keepsake will take on special meaning under the circumstances, especially if it reflects Mom's interests and whether the baby is a boy or a girl.
