Bonding With Books
Creating a Parent/Child Book Club
By Gwen Morrison
To make book clubs for kids and parents even more fun, some parents have created special evenings to talk about the book where they incorporate a theme that is related to the book. It may be that they would decorate the living room like a setting in the story or make a snack that is of the era the story is portrayed in. Creativity can be a great way for kids to absorb the plot of the story – and it can be a lot of fun, too!
Parents who initiate a dialogue with their child about the book they are reading are strengthening their child's memory skills and enhancing their language and vocabulary development.
Reading to our children, or with our children, encourages a lifelong commitment to reading, gives children an appreciation for books and allows parents to spend quality time with their child.
