5. Grow with your baby. You don't need to know a lot of signs to start. Make the same basic signs consistently until Baby begins to sign back to you. Then, as Baby grasps the concept of signing, add more signs to your collection.

6. As Baby's ability to sign grows, you can add more vocabulary. In fact, many babies request more signs from their parents. For example, if you are reading books about animals, you might find Baby asking you for the sign for giraffe. Don't worry, there are lots of ways to increase your sign knowledge. You can take a class, read a book, check out a dictionary or watch a baby signing educational video to learn more. There are some great materials available. The Sign Babies ASL Flash Cards contain 100 signs babies and kids need most. Or check out the Signing Time video series. There are nine videos teaching a range of signs based on different topics such as family life, animals and so forth. Visit http://www.signbabies.com/ to learn more.

7. For more advanced words, check out the online dictionary provided by Michigan State University. Just remember, babies need things to be simple. And don't drop the signs Baby already knows as you add new ones.

You also introduce him to the concept of words on a page. When you add signing to your reading experience, the process becomes an interactive experience. Not only do babies see the words and pictures and hear the sounds, they can also participate by signing along with you. The following books are great to use when signing:
