There's No Place Like a Home Gym
At-home Fitness for Dads-to-Be
By Mark Stackpole
"Dads can do fun things that the kids enjoy, like potato sack races, swimming, biking or kickball," says Dodd. "It is vitally important that the activities be something the kids like and even suggest. They will stick with it if it is perceived as fun rather than as working out."
Calabrese also thinks parents can send a clear message about fitness to their children. "Parents are the greatest role models that children have," she says. "Engage in physical activities with your child as early as possible. Toddlers can lay on your chest or back while you perform exercises such as crunches and push-ups. They add
resistance to your exercises, and it provides quality contact parenting time to your day while you are showing your child the importance of finding time for fitness."
No matter where those extra pounds came from or how long they have been there, it is time for them to go. Fathers-to-be, keep your own cravings in check, even as you journey to the grocery store at 2 a.m. for marshmallow cream and fish sticks. Dads, get off the couch and play a game with your kids rather than watch one with them. And always carve out a little bit of time for yourself to hit the "gym," no matter where you keep it. A good husband and father is one who wants to be around for the long haul. Help take care of your family by taking better care of yourself.
