, make sure you wash your child's hands as soon as they are finished petting the animals, as the animals can carry the E coli bacteria as well as other germs, and toddlers are famous for putting their hands in their mouth!

A few other day trip ideas for toddlers may include a toy store, public gardens, the pet store and parks and museums designed for children.

Day tripping with toddlers can be challenging, but it can also be rewarding. All it takes is a little forethought and patience. As your toddler learns to explore the world around him, day trips will become one of your favorite family activities!

Day Trip Tips

The following tips will help you and your toddler get the most out of your day trips!

  • Find where the bathrooms are first thing. This is very important whether your child is still in diapers or newly potty trained.
  • Take water and other drinks, as excitement seems to make toddlers thirsty!
  • And hungry! Don't forget to take extra snacks to offset those unplanned snack purchases. The difference in price between juice at the gas station and juice at the grocery store is astronomical!
  • Remember to take plenty of things for your toddler to do while in the car. Tapes are great for toddlers to listen to and sing with, especially if they know the songs.
  • Do remember to check the weather. In Oregon, we always check for rain, but remember to check on how hot it's going to be as well. Toddlers can be sensitive to the heat. My daughter is very susceptible to heat stroke, and if we don't take a spray bottle and extra water for her, we can ruin an outing.
  • Before you take them to an event such as a puppet show, call ahead and find out for what ages the show is recommended. Some are perfect for toddlers while others are geared toward older children.
