Holiday Heaven
In the Kitchen With Grandma By Carol Greenberg
Reli grew up during World War I in Czechoslovakia as a hidden child. She spent the first five years of her life with her family in a cave hiding from the Nazis. She told the story of how food was scarce and they had to rely on wild game or help from good people from the village. They had to be careful with the fires they lit for cooking deep inside the cave, as they were always afraid that they would be discovered. Reli told us how very thankful she was to have survived and to be able to live in such a great free country.
She asked the girls what they were thankful for. Both girls hugged and kissed us and told us how grateful they were to have such a wonderful family and to be cared for and loved, especially by their two grandmothers.
Our dinner was a huge success. Ellie pointed out all of the foods she had prepared as if she had done it alone. Especially the cupcakes. As I reflected on the day and the preparation of the food, I decided the main ingredient was love.
