Dad's Turn
Bonding, Learning and Making Way for Baby
By Tracy McGinnis
What Boot Camp Means for Mommy
A good portion of the class also focuses on the new mother. Often, mothers bond with their babies while they're still in the womb and continue forming strong bonds while feeding and caring for them. Still, moms need support and help from their spouses, and boot camp covers everything from labor and delivery to postpartum physical and emotional health and changes. O'Donnell's wife Ann says her husband returned ready to pamper her. "He shared a lot of the knowledge he learned, and I liked that the information came from just men," she says. "That way, it didn't seem like it was women nagging at him. It was also good to hear other men's frustrations to know what to expect."
Recruits and Leaders
Boot Camp for New Dads' facilitators, or coaches, have been trained with videos, manuals and mock scenarios to become certified to lead sessions. Veteran dads are those who volunteer to help with classes after they have participated in boot camp themselves. They return with their children, who are usually only a few months old. These dads play a large role in the learning process because new dads watch them do everything from feedings to changing diapers to calming babies down during the session's three-hour period. There are no moms waiting in the hallways to take over.Want to see more?
