Saying Good-bye to Youth

"The head is crowning!" announced the doctor. "I think you will want to see this." All the fears of passing out or not being able to watch were long gone. I stood where I was told and greeted my child with a smile. Little Dakota Lace was a bit early, but honestly, not soon enough for me.
Several hours later we were led to a private recovery room. Sherry slept as I held my daughter. We stood facing Atlanta as the lights flickered on, illuminating the city from below. Even though I knew she could not understand, I started naming all the buildings. I didn't finish talking to her until daybreak. Then a nurse came in early to take Dakota for the last time. I was just on the verge of sleep when a light rap on the door woke me. I looked up in time to see a friend wave, give me the thumbs up and say goodbye. A warm sense of accomplishment washed over me. I waved to the shadow I once knew as adolescence and smile. My friend will be back, but this time to spend time with my daughter
