Distinctive Decorating

Creating Your Own Holiday Style

Of course, many people find that a holiday just isn't a holiday unless it can be seen through the eyes of a child. Groves suggests that you get older children involved by enlisting their artistic expertise. "Have your kids write poems or thank you notes," he says. "Write them onto squares of paper and roll them into scrolls. Place the scrolls in a basket by the door or in the guest rooms and encourage your guests to take one before they leave."

This year, create your own holiday style. The results will bring authentic joy. After all, isn't that what the season's really about?

Merry Mood Makers

Are you looking for instant holiday magic? Try the following tips to put you in the spirit of the season:

  • Dim the lights. Fill the house with candles, preferably those scented with holiday flavors like evergreen, spiced apple and pumpkin pie.
  • Pipe up the music. Fill the house with the sounds of the season. Whether it's Ella Fitzgerald singing carols or the Boston Pops, liven your senses with a beat.
  • Go where there's snow. If it's just beyond your front door, bundle up and get outside. Smell it even taste it. Decorate your yard with snowmen (and women) and snow angels.
  • Look through pictures of holidays past. Share the memories with your children.
  • Call someone you love.
