  • When all of the chocolates are in place, attach the rosebuds. Break off each stem at the green base of the bud and dab on hot glue. Alternate the angle of each bud as you attach it to the cone.
  • When complete, arrange a circle of rose leaves on your cake plate or stand, and place the topiary in the middle.
  • Set the centerpiece out on your holiday table and enjoy.
  • Kid-friendly Crafts
Other kid-friendly ideas include purchasing non-toxic window paints to trace holiday designs, such as a menorah – a candelabra that represents the eight nights of Hanukkah – or a stand for one black, three red and three green candles for the seven days of Kwaanza.

Peterson also recommends making holiday refrigerator decorations using magnet sheets and coloring-book designs.

And for older children, Barbara Richardson, interior decorator and director of color marketing for Cleveland-based Glidden, a leading manufacturer of architectural paints, suggests selecting an assortment of wooden designs, including stars, balls and hearts. Children can paint with stripes, polka dots or any crazy, kid-inspired design and then fasten them together to adorn a tree, mantel or holiday table. "No more breakable glass ornaments," Richardson says, adding the wooden d袯r makes a great family project.

One final bit of advice: Author and craft expert Kathy Peterson cautions parents not to judge your child's crafting abilities. "There are no rights [or] wrongs when you're making crafts! Only lots and lots of family fun," says Peterson, who has appeared on Home and Garden Television and the Discovery Channel.

With a little creativity, some helping hands and the holiday spirit, turning your home into a winter wonderland can be a joyful experience for the whole family.
